What is Phenol?
Phenol is a mildly acidic toxic white crystalline solid obtained from coal tar and used in chemical manufacture. It was used as the first surgical antiseptic.
Phenols are widely used in household products and as intermediates for industrial synthesis. For example, phenol itself is used as a disinfectant in household cleaners and in mouthwash.
